The beautiful, round tower church of Rickinghall Inferior and the churchyard which surrounds it are not unusual in that they contain memorials and headstones to some of its rectors and their families. However, once the author started to delve into the lives of the clerics, their wives and children using surviving documentary sources (in particular contemporary newspapers and magazines), she uncovered such moving stories that she was compelled to commit them to print. As well as telling the tales of the men behind the title, we also hope that it offers a snapshot of rural parish life of the time, and the role the rector and his family played in village communities.
